DWPI ENHANCEMENTS ONLINE
DWPISM Enhancements on Dialog, STN and Questel•Orbit
If you use Dialog, STN, or Questel•Orbit to access DWPI, this more host-specific information regarding the enhancements may be of interest. If you require more detailed information, please refer to our user manuals and support materials.

New Indexing and Search Enhancements
New suffixes and corresponding display codes now enable Dialog searchers to restrict search and display of records to the DWPI value-added content at the Invention Level.
With the enhanced DWPI release, the new Inventor Name field (IV= or AU=) includes the complete name from original filings. The DWPI standardized Inventor name remains indexed as AU= (current field label). However, only IV is a valid display code.
Many new Basic Index and Limit qualifiers streamline searching:
- /IMAGE suffix to identify records that include images
- /TI, /AB now include the newly added original patent titles and abstracts, as well as DWPI enhanced title and abstract.
Use:
- /TA for both DWPI title and abstract data
- /TD for DWPI title only
- /DA for DWPI abstract only
- DWPI Title Terms suffix changes to /TT from current /DE
New Content
New IPC code indexes for Advanced (ICA=), Core (ICC=), and Attributes (IA=) have been introduced. Both new codes and codes assigned from IPC version 7 are searchable in the IC= index.
Additionally, the enhanced database includes US Classification Codes from original USPTO filings. These have been added as a new searchable field CL=. Previously unavailable in DWPI, these newly-available classifications allow for more precise searching of patent records.
More than 750,000 documentation abstracts are available for the first time in a text-searchable format and users can restrict searches to these abstracts using the suffix /DO. The display code DO will display only the content from the Documentation Abstracts.
Display Enhancements
Some records in DWPI now contain multiple inline or 'embedded' images, as well as supplementary information designed to make each record easier to read.
Other display enhancements include two-letter country code display codes to permit the display of first-level data by specific country. (The AU display format will now display the country data for Australia and DE will display the country data for Germany. To display the Inventor name, now use IV and to display Title Terms, use TT).
Easy to cut-and-paste patent family data saves time and improves post-processing, including direct copy and paste into MS Word and MS Excel.
STN
(Files WPINDEX, WPIDS, and WPIX)

New Search Options
STN now delivers a range of new search options for the enhanced DWPI file, including enhanced abstract sub-sections for more focused searches. The Enhanced Basic Index now contains all value-added text data and the Basic Index Extension has been introduced to search all the new original text fields together.
In line with new original patent content, search options are now available for full inventor names and associated addresses plus full patent assignee names and addresses, and patent agent details.
Individually searchable patent family member data enables users to perform different and more selective searches.
Enhanced display and download options
STN users now have enhanced display and download options available, including:
- Extensive customizable combinations of a variety of original and enhanced data elements
- Extended display options offering in-depth details about each family member
- Thomson Scientific XML download format — for searchers with advanced post-processing needs
Questel•Orbit
(Files DWPI, DWPX, WPAM, and DWPIMV)
Available Now!
The same look-and-feel of the existing DWPI file
has been retained, giving continuity for existing
searchers, however, a new file has been released — DWPIMV
(Members View) file — featuring the original
patent content.
Searchers using the existing DWPI also benefit from a feature to display the corresponding patent information from the new DWPIMV (Members View) file.
The DWPIMV file focuses on first level patent data (by publication and not family) including original titles, abstracts and main claim (either in English, French or German). Names and addresses are provided for assignees, inventors and agents (representatives) and the file also includes US PCL and historical IPC data.
DWPIMV incorporates some of the existing DWPI value-add
content such as Thomson Scientific-assigned titles,
Abstracts and Technology Focus, plus the ability
to focus searches by document type, e.g., Basic,
Equivalent or Intellectual.
